Don't be misled by the title of this excellent book. Only the photographs of children used throughout mark it as being for "young" riders. Anyone starting out with English riding would benefit from this clearly written, well-illustrated introductory manual. The organization of material doesn't always seem the most efficient or logical, but I don't think that affects the usefulness of this visually appealing book. It's very similar in content to The Less-Than-Perfect Rider that Davis co-wrote with Lesley Bayley. This book assumes, though, that the reader hasn't started riding yet, while the other is directed more to adults who are currently riding and looking to improve. My only criticism of this book has to do with the editorial decision to refer to horses as its. While use of the impersonal pronoun may be grammatically correct, it's not in keeping with the tone of the book. Horses are living beings with individual personalities - hes and shes, not it - a fact most modern equestrian books recognize.
