Good information well presented with lots of photographs make this a good book for every horse owner. Its attractive design has sidebars and boxes for easy access to information, and each chapter ends with a useful summary in point form. The book looks at riding and training from the horse's point of view as a prey animal. It starts by exploring horse behaviour and communication, moves on to recognizing pain and stress, then establishing trust. Only with this groundwork does the book go to riding and training, from correctly working with a foal to dealing with established behavioural and riding problems. All the way through, it takes the approach of first understanding why the horse is behaving in a certain way and then working through the problem from the horse's perspective. It finishes with a series of case studies of actual problem horses Richard Maxwell, a student of Monty Roberts, has worked with. This is a book for all levels of rider. It's best suited for the intermediate horse person who already has experience with different horses, but would also make interesting reading for the beginner. An experienced horse person could get lots of pointers as well. Introducing the Horse |
