Chapter Titles
This excellent book might better be titled "The Adult Horse" because it's really about caring for horses once they are no longer babies. Don't bypass this book just because you don't have an old horse. It's just as applicable for 5-year-olds as 10-year-olds, and some of the problems Dr Kellon talks about can be prevented when the horse is younger. Part One covers purchase, care and conditioning. The chapter on buying a horse contains lots of advice on what to look for and questions to ask. There is a good chapter on seasonal care . The chapter on conditioning talks about the effects of various lengths of inactivity and how to avoid problems. It provides advice on interval training for conditioning. Part Two covers the special problems of older horses. It doesn't just talk about arthritis, but overviews problems that can arise in all the different body systems from "moon blindness" in the eye to stones in the urinary tract. Part Three is the only section that really is specific to older horses. Here Dr Kellon looks at the role of the older horse for children and beginners as well as retirement and euthanasia. Altogether, The Older Horse would make a good addition to the library of any horse person who wants to do what's best for their horse.
